Biodynamic Farming Uses Holistic Approach

S&S Homestead Farm is managed biodynamically as an integrated, self-sufficient, living organism. The farm stresses sustainable and ecologically responsible practices. By producing most of the inputs required for growing food and fiber, the farm is able to rely very little on outside resources. Biodynamics’ holistic approach to farm management addresses the environmental, financial and social aspects of the farm, emphasizing a close consumer/grower relationship, biodiversity and a healthy, non-polluting environment.

Principles of Biodynamics

  • The farm is a self-contained, individual entity.
  • Maintaining and improving the health of the soil is the primary way in which the farm progresses and evolves.
  • Healthy soil protects the local environment and leads to the production of high-quality crops, which in turn means better feed for livestock and better food for human beings.

Benefits of Biodynamics

  • Natural pest and disease control is accomplished through acquired plant and animal immunities that are developed by breeding and raising all animals on the farm.
  • Animal wastes are recycled as compost to help nourish the plants that feed animals and humans.
  • Interplanting various crops and flowers encourage pollinators and repel pests.
  • The farm grows high protein grass and other grains to feed the animals that are raised.
  • All fertilizers and compost used to enhance the soil are produced on the farm.
